Well, let me just now invite you to um open your copies of God’s work and the book of second Samuel and as you can see in your bulletins this morning we are going to consider second Samuel chapter five and we will be reading verses one through 16. Again, if you have been listening with us or if you are visiting with us this morning, we have been going through the book of a second Samuel and many of you know this. Let me just repeat it for the sake of our visitors this morning. The book of Second Samuel is so far giving us just one single story. So chapter five is kind of liking many respects, the culination, the great finale, if you if you want to, uh to to see David finally crowned in this position of king of Israel. But not everything is rose colored, and we are going to see that and how the text ends in a very interesting place. But to to my point, this is one single story from chapter two to chapter five, and this is just the closing of the story. So if you are there, second Samuel chapter 5, we are going to read verses one through 16. So please stand to hear the reading of God’s holy and inspired word. Congregation of Christ, thesis, indeed, God’s word. And all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron, and said, behold, we are your bone and flesh in times past when Saul was king over us, it was you who led out and brought in Israel, and the lord said to you, ye shall be the shepherd of my people Israel, and you shall be prince over Israel. So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Heron, and king David made a covenant with them and Heron before the lord. and they anointed David king over Israel. David was 30 years old when he began to reign, and he reigned for years. At Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months, and at Jerusalem he reigned over all Israel and Judah 33 years. And the king and his men went to Jerusalem against the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, who said to David, you will not come in here, but the lion and the blind and the lame will guard you off, will ward you off, excuse me, thinking David cannot come in here. Nevertheless, David took the stronghold of Zion that is, the city of David, and David said on that day, whoever would distract the Jebusites, let him get up the let him get up the water shot to attack the lame and the blind, who are hated by the David’s soul. Therefore it is said, the blind and the lame shall not come into the house, and David left and the stronghold and called it the city of David. And David built the city all around from the millow inward. and David became greater and greater, for the lord the god of hosts was with him, and Haram king of Tyre sent messengers to David and cedar trees, also carpenters and masons who built David’s house, and David knew that the Lord had established him king of Israel, and that he had exalted his kingdom for the sake of his people, Israel. And David took more concubines and wives from Jerusalem after he came from Hebron, and more sons and others were born to David, and these are the names of those who were born to him in Jerusalem, Shamya, Shobab, Nathanan, Solomon, Ibar, Iusia, Nephe, Jaffia, Elishama, Eliada, and Elipalet. Thus far the reign of God’s word congregation, you may be see that. Um, well, there is in history I have found congregation, uh, that if you pay attention to history and its progress, there are small pictures, perhaps revelations of who God is, and of what he wants to accomplish with his creations. His creation, excuse me. Now, these revelations of God is found in both in secular history and in that sense it can be interpreted a mor or less well by Christians, because we know, after all, that God’s providence, his power of our history, controls and guides everything from the beginning until the end, but more pristine, perhaps more clearly than the history of the world, we find the revelation of Hugalin himself in the pages of his scriptures. Here we find, not only a record of what happened in history, but actually more than that we find a commentary on history, on history, excuse me, by the author of history himself, namely, the lord or god, and so in this inspired, inerrant history of the world, especially in the Old Testament side of it, we oftentimes stumble upon narratives, stories that seem to depict for a moment the entrance of eternity into this history of the world, as if in in reading what we are reading, we are almost reading about the end of the world and the beginning of a new era fold for the whole of humanity, and this morning’s narrative is precisely one of those stories in which we feel for a moment, we feel closer to the beginning of a new era, as if everything is going to be fine afterwards. This is kind of like and they lived forever after happy kind of kind of story and precisely because of that then our theme this morning is kingdom established, and I think you will find that in what is it, page, six and seven of your bulletins, theme, kingdom established, and my points will be there for you as well. So we will see this this theme in this morning in three parts. The anointing of the king is the first one, the second is the conquering of the land, and the third one is the calling of the nations, so the anointing of the king, the conquering of the land, and the calling of the nations. So let’s see the first part, the anointing of the king. Now, if you have been with us all all of this time, then you will know, but I’m going to tell you anyway, because I know we have some visitors this morning, that you will know that the big assumption, the big idea behind these chapters so far has been that the lord or God fulfills his promises at the outworking of God’s promises, though has led us to see how they work through a different means. Some of them have been really good, some of them have been really, really dark, but it’s clear enough to us that God never fails his promises, verse one and two indeed versus one and two indeed are a reminder of that all Israel came to David that Hebron and said, behold, we are your born and flesh. It was you who led out and brought in and brought in Israel, and the Lord said to you, you shall be the shepherd of my people, Israel, and you shall be the prince of our Israel. Now unless we get confused about what we mean by God’s promises, we find a reminder here in the text as well, do we not? And more specifically, God promised David that he will be the next king of Israel, and again, we are not to confuse what is being said here. We are not to imagine that God’s promises to David, boys and girls is as if we were watching a Disney movie. and we need to recognize that in the last few decades of our of our culture, we have come to understand God’s promises in such a way, as if God is promising or as if God’s purposes for our lives mean that we will find the right husband, or the wife that is just as beautiful as the girl in the music video, or successing my career and good retirement, or the house of my dreams and the life of happiness. Let me tell you right now that is not God’s purpose for your life, and it was not God’s purposes for David. God’s promises to David and promises to us, by the way, are subservient to the covenant of grace, namely, that God will be our God and the God of our children. This is what we see here in this verse. When the scriptures affirm that God has promised something to David, they do so because there is more in view here than a castle and beautiful wives awaiting David more than his best life right now, more than success and a life filled with the right credentials that David later on can show off. No, it means that God has brought David to this position of power because through David God will advance his plan of redemption for the whole cosmos. and particularly for his people, in fact, we ready to see shadows of that in the text are already, the people of Israel come before David, and they confess that they are born and flesh of David, that is, they are actually one, they are organically united to their k king. They are of the same kin, and they belong to the same people, even though they were divided for a time. and yet this is not the end, because congruent with the nature of the Old T testament and with the nature of the covenant of grace, what is explained through physical means in the Old Testament, is fulfilled in a spiritual means in the New Testament. This is another word’s voice and girls that in Jesus Christ, because of his mercy shown to us, we have been united to him by the Spirit in such a way that we are the body of the Lord Jesus Christ. We are his bones and his flesh, and this union is organic. It takes accounts of families as well as individuals, of church bodies throughout the world, throughout history, and even it will be and even throughout a races, and nations and everything, and it will be finally manifested in its entirety only at the end of the age when we will see him as he is, and we will be with him for ever. This is way much better, by the way, than the idea that the god has a big house waiting for me, or sports cars waiting for me, or the perfect wife waiting for me. God calls his people to himself and unites us to the Lord Jesus Christ, and he takes an account of individuals, families, nations, and whole people’s groups. Not is also the character trade that has been given David by God himself. He is to be a shepherd of God’s people and a leader to them. This is how our true king is to be from God’s perspective, by the way. He is the one who cares for his people. He is the one who guides and protects his people from the attacks of the enemy. just as a shepherd cares for his sheep, David is to be the same thing for his people. That is David’s task, and we will see whether he fulfills that task or not later on, and because that is David’s David’s task, by the way, we can affirm by way of typology, that that is exactly the task of Jesus. He is her shepherd congregation of the Lord. Now, maybe you are wondering now, well, that’s pretty cool. It sounds really interesting. It sounds really deep. He has technical language being used here. That’s all cool. But how does that apply to me? Well, it means congregation for you that because Jesus is this better king, a better than David himself, and because you belong to him and you have been united to him that in Jesus you have a king who loves you and who cares for you a king that will walk with you through life brighter days when everything is happy and beautiful, but also a king that will walk with you in the storms of your life as well. It means that this Jesus that loves you so so much is also a king that will never explode you, will never take advantage of you, that will stick with you in the worst of your days. This is what it means to you a god who loves you and who is for you in Jesus Christ. That is also how that text mentions other things as well. It mentions theali of the covenant that’s how the Hebrew reads actually, the common the culling of the covenant with the Israelites, and it also mentions the duration of David’s kingship, namely, for the years. This is to show us in many respects the limitations of David’s kingship. He was a good king. He was a great king, maybe, but his rule was not for ever. What is the point of having peace? What is the point of having prosperity? What is the point of having a good leader, a shepher in God’s people if his rule, if his kingship is going to end? See, here’s where we see the shortcomings of David. David is not eternal. He doesn’t rule forever. and in that sense his scriptures are lifting up our hearts not to look at David, but to look to to look to a better one, one who never dies a better king who will lead and is leaving his people to enjoy God forever, and that again is found only in Jesus Christ. See, the king is so central in this narrative right now because David is not being a moral example to us. He is not being used to tell us what we need to do actually he’s so central because he’s pointing us to Jesus Christ. In Jesus, the final David, we encounter the very exact thing that our souls are longing for he that is Jesus Christ satisfies our needs, and since he rules for ever, our needs will always be met by him, and only by him by the way, since he lives forever, we are united to him, and because we are united to him, we are truly his bones and his flesh, this mystical, spiritual union that has already begun in us through the spirit in us. Now, we need to move to the second part, the conquering of the of the land. So what is a king without a kingdom, though, right? And in the book of Samuel, we find at least three characteristics of a king to be for him to be a true king. First of all, he needs to be called by God. we have seen that already. second, he has to be anointed by the people and we have seen that already, and third, he also has to gain control over over the land. And that’s exactly what we find in verse 6, and the king and his men went to Jerusalem against the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, who said to David, you will not come in here, but the blind and the lame will ward you off, thinking David cannot come in here. See the jide’s voice and girls were the inhabitants of this city of Jerusalem, Salem, and their pedigree, their presence in the land, stretches back through Milania many, many years. One of its kings, in fact, was the famous Milchizedec. By the time of the judges, the jusites had already proven to be a very hard to conquer enemy, which explains why the jervusites are disdaining David in this way. In fact, they are so so confident that the that their walls will resist the attack that they are mocking David, saying that even the lame and the walk will be able to fight him, and defeat him, and yet ver 7, nevertheless, David took the stronghold of a Zion that is the city of David. See not is how the text does not give us an explanation of how David was able to conquer the the seating, the the the fortress of a Zion nor is the concern of the sacred author to tell us either. The author is in fact assuming that you and I are going to read the scripture supernaturally that is, we are going to understand that David is successful precisely because because the Lord God is with David, that this dain of the Jebusites in this respect points forward, does it not to the dis disdain that Christ will have to endure? After all, think about it didn’t the Pharisees the Sanhedron, and even the governors of this world disdained the Lord Jesus Christ? Didn’t they see in Christ nothing but a lunatic a criminal condemned out of envy, and and the innocent victim of some envious enemy who were hungering for power and were toying with him because they wanted more power, and even in that sense, a toy in the hands of an ambitious pilot, who care about nothing except his reputation. but you and I congregation know that the disdain of Christ, the foolishness of the cross, is at the same time the power of God for salvation. It is the cross of Jesus Christ that brought down the walls of the kingdom of Hades, and because of his wounds now we have been healed, have we not? In the same way, as we travel in this world, as the church of Jesus Christ, we are not to understand our traveling on our pilgrimage with an other realized scathology. thinking that we can rule the world right now. No congregation. This age is the age of disdain. This age is the age of persecution. This is the age in which we are not seen as something good and worthy. but when the end of the age comes, the church of Christ will see the final victory. The walls of the city of man will finally fall, and these walls will give a way to the heavenly walls erected not by human hands, but by God’s hands. So maybe to day you are being disdained by the devil congregation. Maybe you are being mocked. Oh, maybe the devil is reminding you that once again you have fallen in the same sin as before, and how dare you because you are not worthy that you are a failure and that you are never going to be free from this mortal flesh that god doesn’t love you. but do not lose hope congregation. we walk in Christ. We are united to him.member that we have his spirit enos yes, with sin and yes we fail yes, many times we are going to repeat the same sin once and again and again. but Christ is with you. You need to come to him. You will repent before him, and you trust in him. He not only forgives us, but he also empowers us to keep walking in the faith. In Christ, sin has already been defeated, even if you don’t see it, even if you don’t feel it, even if you don’t realize of it. Now something in the text I found is very cryptic and kind of different verse eight. What I said what is the shaft that David mentions? and the truth is, we really don’t know. There are some theories out there, but no one knows for sure. One mother says that in his office of a king and this is really important, in his office of a king, David is bringing justice to these priful Jocites. They rejected the king in prayfulness, and so they are punished for it, and we have already talked about this before, have we not, but it doesn’t take much to realize that this is again a small mirror in the story showing us the future in Jesus Christ, because Jesus congregation has already conquered of our evil and Satan and principle. Satan is a defeated enemy, but still a day’s coming when he will punish Satan and his followers definitely. And let me tell you what it will be a very good day because those ugly things that we see in the world to day, the evil that we see other people experiencing on ourselves experiencing all of those things will be no more. It is a thing which we will rejoice and will sing to the lamb of God because he has definitely conquered over the evil powers of this world, and when the kingdoms of the world will come to be the kingdom of the lamb 9 10 things in perspective for us all of this success, all of the things that David has Guang now, the fact that David has now this capital city for himself, a fortress indeed, is due to the fact that the lord or god was with him. And as I said before, David conquers, not because he is so strong, not because he is a powerful leader, but because the lord God is fighting with him. There is a precious truth here for us congregation. The truth that in Jesus Christ, because of his sacrifice, that is not against us. but he is with us. If that is our confession, if that is what we believe in, there is no reason for us then to doubt about God’s purposes for us. Through good days and bad days, through uncertainties, and even the opposition of sin, the world and the devil, we can rest assured all the time that God is our God, and that we are his people, that we are his and that his ours. Now let us look to our third point, the calling of the nations. As you know, one thing is to conquer a city, and a different thing is to establish that city as the capital city of your own kingdom. and after the destruction, then, the work of reortifying the city needs to be done and preparing it for habitation and everything. And here is where we find this very interesting verse in verse 11, and Hiram, king of Tyre, sends messengers to David and cedar trees and also carpenters and masons who built David a house. Now this is not as simple interesting mention in the text. This is not as if a verse elimin is inc consequential to the whole history of the scriptures or indifferent to what Israel a God is doing in Israel. This is not this is not another words. Oh, by the way, this is happening, but you can ignore it. It doesn’t mean anything, so don’t worry about it. No, this is rather a very very important verse is close to the heart of the Old Testament that God has for the people, all throughout the old testament every single time that God delivers his people, he is doing so for a twofold purpose. The first one and the most important one of all is to bring glory to his own name to make his name famous throughout the earth. The second purpose is linked to the first, through god making no known his name, he is also calling the nations to belong to him and to come to him. This is called the mission of God in the Old Testament, the messode, and and he wants to use Israel for that to bring the nations and to worship him in the Old Testament. God is not a god in other words, who wants to be happy to be the exclusive possession of Israel. He is the god who wants to call all peoples, all nations to him, and so hearing David we are seen a faint a small picture of that. We find, in fact, that the fame of god is already been heard and spreading as far as tire. and moreover, we hear that timber and another precious things from Tyre adorn the palace of David, the house of David. This is important as well. God does not God does not despise the riches of the nations. The cultural artifacts and the cultural products of Tyre become serviceable for the people of Israel. This calling, however, as you know, is very, very limited, only the king of Tyre sends his royal gifts, no other kingdom. but there is a good reason for that congregation the nature, the whole nature of the Old Testament is to be limited in a scope, is small in other words, the purposes of God are not fully developed in the old testament. It is impossible, it runs against the nature of the Old Testament. Everything is limited there. rather, the calling of the nations here, as small as this is, anticipates the calling of the nations in the Lord Jesus Christ. It is in Jesus that God finally removes the wall of separation. It is in Jesus, there is no Jew or gentle, men or woman, free or a slave, and in that sense in Jesus, nothing is despised. Even the most humble of the workers, even the most humble vocation, is called to the service of the Lord Jesus Christ. It is naïve to think that Christianity has not made a difference in the world. It is naive to think that our vocations our home lives are our lives as parents and children, students and workers is meaningless to the Lord Jesus Christ. That is simply not true. We congregation adorn the palace of king Jesus with the treasures that we produce in our vocations from the humblest worker to the most important one, we all bring glory to Christ with whatever we are doing. from moms to workers, from students to teachers, and listening now to verse 12, and David knew that the Lord had established him king of Israel, and that he had exalted his kingdom for the sake of his people, Israel. Now there is a little bit of irony here, I find, maybe even for us readers. But this an irony that you and I experience as well. Here’s what I mean by that. You and I have known all the time in this story that David is able to conquer everything and unable to do everything because the Lord was with him. However, the interesting thing is David didn’t know that for David, the picture was not clear. He just dawned in him in verse 12 oh by the way, God is with me. Go figure. but but this isn’t then a picture of our experience as well. We walk in this world with our limitations. We don’t see and we don’t know like God knows. We are limited and and many, many times we are finding ourselves in the midst of trials and triulations and temptations, our minds wander away, our hearts doubt if God is really there, it really with us, our experiences, seem to speak against the truth of his scriptures and we suffer. How can God be with us when we experience need? When when how can God be with us if my body is failing right now? How can God be with me if my future is uncertain? How can God be my God when everything is against me right now? when I seem to be such a failure? Is there even a future for me right now? And in fact, those of you who have lived longer than some of us know full well what it is to suffer, do you not? and some among us are read in their tender years have already seen how deeply impactful, excuse me, evil can be in their lives. is this experience that the sacred author is making reference to that these months and years in which we didn’t know if God was for us. but the good news congregation is that thankfully we are not and thankfully we are not in David’s time. We do have the complete cut a word of galaateral, the full revelation of his glory, and it is his word that remains us every single lords day that God is for us in Jesus Christ, and not only that, but his word is the one who reminds us that God will never leave us nor abandon us, and it is his word that reminds us that even though we suffer, and even though we have this suffering here and right now, his word reminds us that this is not forever, and that it is not in vain that we are being conformed after the image of Christ, and then we also have the benefit of having the holy Spirit in us, and it is him who sustains our lives. It is him who help us during the storm. It is him who reminds us that God indeed use used and uses everything for our good he has done that in the past, he will do it to day and the future will be not different. It is then that we just like with David, know that the Lord has been with us, so take comfort congregation. This portion this morning is here to remind you that God knows you full well. so much so that he left this gritten down for you, so you can understand that you are not the only one and that God will never let you go. One day you two will see this very same truth through it all the Lord was with you in Jesus Christ in any case look at verse 13, and David took more concubines and wives from Jerusalem after he came from Hebron, and more sons and others were born to David. So he is not stopping. isn’t he? He’s having more wives and more children. So there is a two sided kind here in the text. We see glory in verse 11, but we also see shame in verses 13 to 16, and this is perhaps the biggest failure of the whole kingdom of David that despite how good of a king he seems to be, he is still like any other king of the nations, and he is behaving as such he has many wives, something that, according to duteronomy a king is not to do. He multiplies children from these wives, which is not allowed that is actually condemned excuse me, and many of these wives are simply there because he’s making alliances with the nations, but others others reflect the darker side of king David. excuse me, and we are going to see that later on because of this, the text is reminding us to look forward to another, not today, well, because he cannot save you. but to one who brought a kingdom, not out of a sinful alliances, but out of obedience to the father, Jesus congregation Jesus is where the text is pointing us to. Jesus is the better king David. Your protector, your defender. he is the king who rules the universe right now, and who one day will rule the universe with power. And as this Jesus, who has left his spirit with us, so we know that he has not abandoned us. This is story in other words. is not about how good David is because he’s not, and and it’s not about how you need to be like David because it will be a failure anyway. It is rather about how David during his life was used by God in order to point people to the better king that is still to come Jesus Christ, and how even to day his history is used by God to remind us about Jesus Christ, not what we can do, another power, another efforts, but what Jesus has done for you are ready. Therefore, this is what we need to do. We need to look to Jesus in the hopes that he will always be there for us, and that he will never abend us, abandon us or leave us. Let’s pray. Thank you, father, for your word. Uh, thank you for the Lord Jesus Christ, and thank you for the comfort that our salvation doesn’t rest in our efforts and in who we are, but in you, and father, as many of us go through tribulations and many difficulties, it is easy to believe that we can do better and try harder. But there are days in those trib relations in which we realize how we can we how feeble we are and those days, lord, bring the comfort of the gospel bring the holy spread in our hearts and lives, so we may understand that the Lord Jesus Christ paid for our sins that the deb is already covered that we are yours, and that nothing will ever move us away from you. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
